Glassine is a smooth, dense and translucent paper made by heavily refining fibres and then calendering the sheet. The process closes much of the open pore structure and creates the characteristic glossy, grease-resistant surface without relying on the appearance of a plastic film.

Useful properties

Its low porosity and smoothness make glassine useful for envelopes, interleaving, food contact applications, stamp and art protection, and some release-liner constructions. Translucency lets a user see the object while the paper provides a clean physical barrier.

Glassine is not a universal high-barrier material. Water vapour, oxygen and grease performance depend on grade, weight, coatings and converting. Creases or pinholes can change protection, and heat-seal requirements may need an added treatment.

Specification questions

Ask whether the application needs direct food-contact compliance, a release coating, heat resistance, printability or a defined barrier value. Confirm the local recycling route for coated or siliconised versions. The base paper’s fibre origin does not by itself determine how a converted glassine structure will perform or be recovered.
