A digital paper must do more than look attractive in a swatch book. It has to feed through a specific press, accept its imaging chemistry and survive the intended finishing sequence. Start with the equipment manufacturer’s qualified substrate range, then narrow the choice by the job’s visual and physical requirements.
Press compatibility
Toner equipment exposes sheets to heat and pressure, so moisture and dimensional stability matter. Inkjet systems may require a treated or coated surface to keep droplets controlled. Stiffness, curl, static and surface conductivity can all influence transport through the engine.
Check grain direction before folding, binding or scoring. Confirm that heavy solids will not crack and that laminates, varnishes or adhesives bond to the imaged surface. A substrate that prints successfully can still fail in finishing.
Approve a production sample
Run enough sheets to reach normal press conditions and include difficult imagery, fine type, solids and finishing marks. Evaluate colour, mottle, rub resistance, show-through and finished handling. Record the exact mill, grade, weight, finish and batch information in the job specification so a successful test becomes repeatable production knowledge.
